Our Story

Brown Reflections Publishing company is about creativity and expressing all the variations of the human experience through written word and realistic fiction. It was founded to construct an open door for myself and other writers to bypass the traditional gatekeepers who determine whose voices will be heard. Our goal is to create a presence and momentum that will allow our show case of books to channel into greater opportunities. In the books, I want to convey layers of heart, soul, intellect, and humor that can be related to African Americans across the country.

Dr. Karen Sloan-Brown is the author of several books, the non-fiction "A Reflection: What a Difference a Day Makes, What About 100 Years?" and "Educating the Nation on a Shrinking Budget," and three novels, "The Fortunes of Blues and Blessing," "Searching for Everland," and "A New Season: The Fortunes of Blues and Blessings Book II."

She grew up in Philadelphia, the daughter of an activist in the Civil Rights Movement from whom she inherited her passion for writing. A scientist with a love for history Karen earned her Bachelor of Chemistry, Master of Education, and Doctorate of Education degree at Tennessee State University.

Karen lives with her husband and daughters in Nashville, Tennessee.

 My Dad:

The person who most impacted my life by never giving up, not in one instance, not in one period of his life, not in any specific area, but all through his life in several instances and through several challenges was my father, Rev. Cordell Holland Sloan.

In the little spare time that he had, he spent years writing poetry and working on a book about his life. He passed away in 1987 from heart failure. My mother kept all his work for decades with plans of seeing it published. I inquired with a few publishers about 20 years ago, with no responses. I feel blessed that I was able to public his book of poems at my company, Brown Reflections.
